Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Athletes will gain the option to question specific calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the protocol already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move comes just a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review other situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of reviews a player can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
