The Kindness of Strangers: How a Gentleman I Barely Knew Helped Me Secure the Role That Altered My Path

During the late 1980s, I was beginning a backpacking trip to the European continent with a travel partner. Because my friend was considering enrolling in graduate studies in the Big Apple, we had planned a 14-day stopover there on the way to London.

We got to the student accommodation, a large 10-storey building on the Upper West Side known as International House. Setting down our luggage, we headed straight to the dining hall, where we grabbed food, sat down, and engaged in conversation with fellow residents.

Sitting next to me was an gentleman from Iraq enrolled in an engineering program at Columbia University. He inquired what I did for a living, and I shared that I had recently completed my studies with a scientific background and had been working on studies involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an research lab at Columbia University – close to the engineering faculty, which was why he was aware of it. He recommended that I should apply for a role with them. I dismissed the idea, explaining that I was heading off to Europe and, even more importantly, I lacked a US visa.

A day later I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that after dark. The engineering student approached me and informed me that he had arranged an interview for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Since he had taken the effort, I showed up for the discussion – but immediately explained to my prospective employer that I was without a work permit, so I was unable to accept the role.

In typical New York fashion – a city where anything feels possible – she said: “That can be arranged. What's your start date?” I never got on that flight to London.

I worked there for three years. An advantage of the role was that I was granted complimentary education at Columbia, and I took advantage to complete a master’s of international affairs.

I never saw that student again and I am unaware of his name, but his incredible act of kindness transformed my future in multiple respects. I lacked the confidence or self-assurance to approach someone at an Ivy League university and ask for a job. Moreover, I had consistently hoped to pursue education overseas, but could never have afforded it without that educational benefit.

What's more, that gig at Columbia paved the way for a role in Europe where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I currently share a family of four kids. That encounter altered everything. That kind stranger redirected my path in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
