In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The September revolt was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Political Consultations Underway
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.
After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
