Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple interviews following England's defeat in the second Ashes versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment after England were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – after England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard coming here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is noise from the outside. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
